How Ireland and the US Piloted Basic Incomes for Artists

Panellists: Catherine Martin (Minister, Department of Tourism, Culture, Arts Gaeltacht, Sports & Media), Sarah Calerderon (Creatives Rebuild New York, Culture Ireland), Shafeka Hashash (Economic Security Project)
Moderator: Angela Dorgan (First Music Contact, Music From Ireland)

A discussion on the successful campaign for a basic income for artist’s (BIA) pilot in Ireland and the lessons arising from the first year of its implementation. Overall, BIA aims to pilot a sector specific support for the arts, in the form of a basic income, to recognise the value of time spent on creative practice and the key contribution of arts workers to the creative process. The importance of advocacy by and for artists will be discussed in the context of supports for creative practice, exploring how this model could be replicated in other countries or cities around the world.

15:30 – 17:13 | Paramount Theatre, 713 Congress Ave

Film Screening: Kneecap

A frighteningly articulate rap group from Belfast, Kneecap seamlessly merge Irish with English, satire with socially conscious lyrics, and reality with absurdity. Theirs is a voice which comes screaming from the too-often deprived areas of the North of Ireland, speaking in a language which is too-often ignored. It makes for a suitably electrifying and unique blend of 'explosive delivery, graphic humour and unrelenting charm [that’s] reminiscent of early Eminem' (LA Times).

Kneecap are Mo Chara, Móglaí Bap, and DJ Próvaí. Their first release — 2017’s C.E.A.R.T.A — was banned from Irish radio station RTÉ due to ‘drug references and cursing’. The ban in no way influenced the band’s future output.
